De Zuivelhoeve, well-known as the manufacturer of yogurt and custard in recognizable buckets. Less known is the beautiful environment in which these dairy products are being produced.

The Roerink family, owner of the third-largest dairy producer in the Netherlands, is not only proud of this, but also very careful about this legacy.

For this reason, investments were made in the best available water technology after the capacity in Twekkelo was expanded. Water required to keep the dairy installations clean, is then treated to such an extent that it complies with the strictest European directive for discharge into surface water.

After biological treatment and membrane filtration at 0.04 micrometers, an extra step has been added to the design of the water treatment installation. In the Biozone, a large pond with fauna and flora, purified water is brought to the same specification as that of the receiving stream into which it is discharged. The purified water is then in equilibrium with the water in the meandering Strootbeek. This small creek transports water from Germany to the Twentekanaal.

Allowing the water to drain off slowly from the Biozone, also prevents drying out of the soil in Twente. With this unique approach, De Zuivelhoeve is the first Dutch food manufacturer to contribute to improving groundwater and surface water with its water treatment.
